Standardizing Clinical Guidelines at the CPCA Quality & Technology Conference

In February, PHMI’s Practice Transformation Coach and Program Office lead Eugenia Black, MPH, MSN, along with Dr. Elise Pomerance, PHMI Clinical Consultant, and Dr. Danielle Oryn, Chief Medical Officer, Aliados Health led a session at the annual California Primary Care Conference (CPCA) Quality & Technology Conference in San Ramon, CA. The session, titled “Standardizing Clinical Guidelines: A Collaborative Approach to Recommending Clinical Guidelines for Community Health Centers in the Population Health Management Initiative (PHMI),” was focused on the approach and work to date.

The presentation showcased the extensive work led by PHMI clinician leaders through the initiative’s Clinical Guideline Advisory Group (CGAG), highlighting the process of regularly vetting and endorsing clinical guidelines for each PHMI core and supplemental measure. This work was made possible by the dedication of the CGAG’s primary reviewers, including representatives from the following CHCs:

  • Jerome de Vente, APLA Health and Wellness
  • Irving Ayala Rodriguez and Ferishta Gousse, Clinica Sierra Vista
  • Chinhnam Hathuc, East Valley Community Health Center
  • Elaine Joy Soriano, Golden Valley Health Center
  • Christine Park, Northeast Valley Health Corporation
  • Kelvin Vu, Open Door Community Health Centers
  • Danielle Oryn, Redwood Community Health Coalition / Aliados Health
  • Anastasia Williams, San Fernando Community Health Center
  • Yohanna Barth-Rogers, UMMA
  • David Luna, Valley Community Healthcare
  • Anjali Mahoney, Venice Family Clinic

Because CHCs vary greatly in their approach to utilizing clinical guidelines, many do not have a formal process to review, adopt and follow clinical guidelines consistently in clinical practice. The presenters focused on the benefits of CHCs coming together in a coordinated way to collaboratively select and operationalize standardized clinical guidelines, as well as the steps PHMI takes to create a standardized approach to review, adopt, and promote established clinical guidelines for the PHMI Cohort.

There were more than 60 attendees participating in the interactive session, including representatives from four PHMI CHCs.
